THE COVER == LIONS GATE = Arching over the entrance to Vancouver’s harbour
is a beautiful web of intricately suspended steel. Day and night, its taut
steel strings sing the original hymn to progress, hope and riches first
composed in the hearts and minds of its builders. Celebrated in Douglas
Coupland’s paean as a «bridge to heaven,» the Lions Gate Bridge has
become an icon of the city, not only to heritage conservationists, but to
citizens of and visitors to Vancouver from around the globe.

Like
all great historic landmarks, the Lions Gate Bridge remains a source of
powerful, sometimes illuminating, sometimes mysterious stories of the people
and times which gave birth to it. In addition to celebrating this bridge and
its grand design, Lions Gate sets out to reveal these stories for the first
time, including the unresolved violation of nationhood the building of the
bridge on Native land entailed. Most mysterious of all is the figure of the man
who both conceived and built this great enterprise.

Taylor is a character straight out of Ayn Rand: ambitious, shrewd, visionary, fearless,
competitive, a man given to great economic and political risk, he appears to
triumph in the embrace of Britain’s nobility, high society, and financiers he
has courted, and who appear to make the completion of his project both
physically and politically possible. Yet at the royal opening ceremonies, he is
not represented among the dignitaries, but watches from the sidelines with the
ordinary citizens, having earlier surreptitiously sealed his story into one of
Charles Marega’s lions who guard the south approach to this bridge of mystery.

THE AUTHOR = Lilia D’Acres
teaches literature and has a long history of commitment to the development of
the literary arts in B.C. She created the first B.C. writers directory,
Starting Line-up, for North Vancouver schools in 1989; worked on Twigg’s
Directory of 1001 BC Writers in 1992; was involved with BC Bookwork and has
co-produced the B.C. Book Prizes. She also founded the George Woodcock Centre
for the Arts and Intellectual Freedom Fund, currently housed at the new U.B.C.
Library, where it was endowed in 1996.

THE AUTHOR = Donald Luxton
is a founding Director of the Heritage Vancouver Society and the Victoria
Heritage Foundation; Director of the Vancouver Heritage Conservation
Foundation; and founding and current President of the Canadian Art Deco
Society. He has also been active in the field of public education through the
teaching of heritage conservation courses. His heritage consulting firm, Donald
Luxton & Associates, has carried out numerous municipal planning projects,
heritage inventories and the restoration of public buildings throughout B.C.,
Alberta and the Yukon.

ABOUT == The Lions Gate Bridge, opened in 1938, officially known as the
First Narrows Bridge, is a suspension bridge that crosses the first narrows of
Burrard Inlet and connects the City of Vancouver, British Columbia, to the
North Shore municipalities of the District of North Vancouver, the City of
North Vancouver, and West Vancouver. The term «Lions Gate» refers to
The Lions, a pair of mountain peaks north of Vancouver. Northbound traffic on
the bridge heads in their general direction. A pair of cast concrete lions,
designed by sculptor Charles Marega, were placed on either side of the south
approach to the bridge in January, 1939.

The
total length of the bridge including the north viaduct is 1,823 metres (5,890
feet). The length including approach spans is 1,517.3 m (4,978 ft), the main
span alone is 473 m (1,550 ft), the tower height is 111 m (364 ft), and it has
a ship’s clearance of 61 m (200 ft). Prospect Point in Stanley Park offered a
good high south end to the bridge, but the low flat delta land to the north
required construction of the extensive North Viaduct.

The
bridge has three reversible lanes, the use of which is indicated by signals.
The centre lane changes direction to accommodate for traffic patterns. The
traffic volume on the bridge is 60,000 – 70,000 vehicles per day. Trucks
exceeding 13 tonnes (14.3 tons) are prohibited, as are vehicles using studded
tires. The bridge forms part of Highways 99 and 1A.

On
March 24, 2005, the Lions Gate Bridge was designated a National Historic Site
of Canada.
